Me and dodgy Frank finally fully dissasambled the motor from the truck down to a bare block yesterday, removing the harmonic balancer, cam, con rods and pistons. The pistons were mostly ok except for one which had a lot of blow by and was satrting to score it's cylinder a bit, nothing too bad tho. All of the shells were starting to show scoring, and about half of the rings had broken in half. Good thing I yanked it for building, it only had a few miles left in it before starting to go bad I think!!

Anyway, after lookin at the con rods, I reckon a new set is on order. The block looks fine, it'll be good after an overbore. I'm not quite sure what to do with the crank tho, it has some light scoring. Now, seeing a new crank (normal duty £250, 600 odd for high perf) isn't silly money, is it worth having the old one reground or not? Comments?

best to let some engine builder have a look at it nick,we have bradford grinders over here that do regrind and new shells and even harden n balance and lighten yer crank if its in decent shape for less money than a new crank, and your new one if ordered might need hardening and balancing anyways.keep us updated fella.

i had my block bored .030" over for about £120 and my crank reground .040" under for £40 .

i would say it depends on the type of power you'll be banging out . my engine will be good for about 400 bhp and thats about the limit of my cast crank shaft , any more and i would have had to go for forged ( although i did go for forged pistons and con rods )

what sort of power you after , if your thinking high output then if you can stretch to it go for forged ,.

Aiming for 450hp initially, maybe more later

No, I'm from Doncaster But, I did live in Wycombe once (mistake!), and have always lived since in and around South-West London. Dodgy Frank lives near Wycombe, so I get up that way a bit, I was there tonight. Have you seen the truck about?

The only bit left I'm umming and awwing about is the crank. It's (presumably) a stock cast item. After some reading, it appears new cast cranks are 250ish, with forged items coming in at about 650 (pounds/dollars).

At first some reading on the tinternet seemed to suggest that cast cranks are only good up to about 550p, until I came across this article:

http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/48499_cheap_horsepower_engine_build/

They suggret that as long as you've got good new pistons and forged con rods, the stock cast crank will hold up to 700hp? This is excatly the sort of build I'm going for, so I think I'm now pretty much decided: grind the original crank and throw it back in.

My sig picture was taken round the corner from when I lived on Battersea Rise, South west london, Zone 2!! No where near Wycombe that one!

You must know a different Frank, my mate's into Land Rovers and trucks, not day vans ...
