Hey Guys,

The Camaro went in for its MOT last weekend and passed with a few queries from the test centre.

One was the need for sidelights. Its the second year running that the car been through there and they didn't bring it up before so i'm just curious if some regulations have changed or that. Basically they don't reckon it has any.

The other thing was on the emmission test the coolant started boiling over. It seems that the fan no longer comes in at all which is a bit worrying if it gets stuck in traffic. Can someone offer me a detailed describtion of where the coolant fan relay is so i can check it. I've checked the fuse and thats ok, the fan physically turns which is a plus though whether the motors burnt out or not i'm not sure i just wanted to check the relay but my Chilton manual doens't show its where abouts for a 1991 RS.

Cheers for any help!

Andy

if you cant sort it,
ya can get an after market sensor that switches the fan on,

put a feed direct on to the fan to see if it works first,

If its the dual fan system like mine then the fan switch is on the passenger side head. Its like a big 24mm bolt with a thermo coupling on it, about £15 from us automotive,. i think that sensor controls the second fan for when the car needs it. like hot weather and such.

There is also a temperature control sensor , i think thats what they call it, near the thermostat housing.

My car was overheating the other month so i replaced the sensor on the head and it sorted the problem

hope that helps

There is also the thermostat on the radiator, on the top right hand side of it (looking towards the car). Its just like a big nut with some wires coming off it. Any decent auto parts shop should have one. I just changed mine for £12. I haven't actually wired it up yet tho, its still wired directly to a switch on the dash so I turn the fan on manually.

First thing you should do tho, is what Art said. Put a feed on it to see if it turns on. I'm surprised the guy at the mot place didn't do that for you, its a 30 second job.

Hi Andy,

I have a compasionate mot tester.

have been going there for years, with all my cars, mum's car, son's car, daughters car, etc.

Front amber side lights.... no problem
No fog.......no problem (the wires are there underneath)
all red rear lights.......no problem

What he does check is all the wheel bearings, brakes, steering, bushes, all the real safety stuff.

he knows I can bring it with the right lighting, but as he said, I know you will just swap it back again.

Fair enough.

Hey Guys,

Finally got a chance to get under the bonnet. Hooked off the fan connector and checked it with a meter, found the earth was there and then connected up a power supply to the right prongs off the fan... nothing. I think the fan is knackered.

One sure way which i'm thinking of trying tomorrow is putting a meter across the connector and starting her up. I'm a bit dubious of how long i'll have to wait though. Is there anyway of getting the fan to start like turning on the A/C?

motor-motor: We have a fairly good guy who does the MOT, last year he checked it over and saw the rear fog light but couldn't get it to work, he said he'll pass it though. When i got home and had a look it turned out someone had just bolted it to the rear crumple zone so i had to wire it up.

We're still not totally sure what he means and we'll get him to explain it because i'm pretty sure the lower front lights are side lights as well as indicators.

Cheers again guys for your help!

Andy

You need to have clear side lights on the front. Your indicator/sidelights are amber. You are allowed amber sidelights aswell as clear ones. I don't know how camaro lights work, but can you stick a double filament lamp in one of each of the twin headlamps and take the amber sidelight wire and connect it up to it? Or just ignore it for a year then get some cheapo clear temporary lights wired up which you can remove as soon as you get home.

Yeah i've just been out and checked them, bit difficult in blazing light.

It has amber sidelights like you say which flash when you turn on the indicator.

Was just looking at the back of the housing though to whether you can fit another lightbulb in there.

How has everyone else done it? I dont get this double filament business.

Cheers

You don't need another lightbulb. You can get a single bulb with 2 filaments (the little wire bit which lights up) inside it. You can get them from halfrauds for pennies, it's just then wiring them up. I can't remember off-hand if they have 2 sets of connnections at the back. I would have thought they would do, then you can take a feed from the amber sidelight to that. Check how many wires go to you amber ones tho. Hopefully its 2, one for the indicators and 1 for the sidelights, if its only 1 then your clear sidelights will also flash and you're not allowed to have interuppted sidelights (another reason why the amber ones fail). You might have to trace the wire back to the sidelight witch if it isn't obvious.

for that, greatley appreciated, i'll get out there tomorrow and check it!

I had a look under the skirt and it appears to only have one bolt holding them in, so heres tempting fate and saying it shouldn't be that hard to get out!

For the actual bulb holders I've just glued on some Vauxhall Astra sidelights with the orange plastic removed, as they seemed the best shape to fit with the existing light setup.

Can you put a pic of that up? Id like to see how that looks now. Certainly sounds a lot better than what the MOT man did to it when I had it. I was horrified when I saw what they'd done!
