Hi all, My brakes need a good going over, the left side isnt releasing quickly enough when you let off the brakes and its pulling to the right when braking, so i took the wheel off to have a look, tried freeing the two rods off a bit, it helped a little bit but not much. anyway once its sorted the brakes will need bled, i tried loosening the bleed nipple while i was there to get some air out but it wouldnt budge so they will probably end up shearing off Do these cars have specific ones you need to get from USautomotive or anything or can anyone tell me if they are universal etc, also can you get the automatic bleeding ones for the 3rd gens ?

I would suggest if you doing a brake overhaul, then do it right first time. What you have probably realised by now is that 3rd gen brakes are awful,so if they are not working well, they'll be double awful. If they are not releasing, you could have a siezed or siezing caliper.Another common fault is for the brake hoses to collapse. You are correct in your worry about shearing of the nipple but its more likely you'll just round it off. If I were you,i'd take the caliper off and then tighten the nipple in a vice and turn the caliper to loosen it. While your at it check out the wear in your pads and discs. If they havent been replaced for years, now might be a good time, especially importing them yourself with the dollar/pound situation. My mate just bought discs, pads, calipers and hoses for his corvette from the states all for under £300 its all very easy to do good luck PM

Hi. I've never actually rounded one off yet! Or broken one. Make sure you use a hex socket or ring spanner and not a bi hex one. No excuses for rounding one off. American bleed nipples are pretty tough. Plenty of penetrating oil and a bit of a turn at a time and back and more penetrating oil. When it is out, make sure it is clear. They can be easily blocked especially if there was no dust cap on. Good luck. Andy.

I had one sheer off once - some very careful drilling soon had it out safely. Then cleaned up the thread with a thread cutter and problem sorted! If I remember correctly it was easy to get a replacement.

Ok this is for all 3rd gen owners who have done their own brakes on the driveway with no windy guns or anything like that, how did you get the calipers off ? Im trying to undo the top big bolt and its just not moving, Ive pretty much emptied a can of WD40 over all the bolts, left for a couple of days, sprayed again, then today i tried undoing the top one with a 24mm spanner but it wont shift at all. Ideally i would get a socket on there and try and crack it off with the wheel brace but i cant get a socket on because of the lip/guard thing that goes behind the brake disc, any tips ?

That's not the caliper retaining bolt! Those 2 24mm nuts and bolts secure the knuckle to the base of the strut. Don't undo them! If you look behind the caliper at the top and the bottom, you should see 2 cap head bolts/pins (allen key needed). 3/8" I think. These need removing and the caliper will just come off. Let me know if you are having trouble. Andy.
