71RS -> Magnaflow X Pipe System (May 24 2007 11:56:57)

As the old transverse system on my early gen 2 was about to dissolve (think the baffles had left this world some time ago - loud but with a harsh mettalic edge, bit wearing after a while), surfed the net for  new system.

Didn't want another transverse system a: they seem to be more expensive than the equivalent true dual and b: because of my Herb Adams anti roll bar, the muffler is about 1/2 a gnat's from one the a/r hangers and that's after gentle persuasion with an angle grinder and adjusting hammer![:D]

Decided on 2 1/2 stainless Magnaflow Dual System (cheaper from NPD than Magnaflow themselves) and booked in at NAMCO for fitting. This is where the fun begins.....

Starting at the back, tailpipes appear to be designed for a std Gen 2 ie no rear anti roll bar let alone a hefty race* one with 2 coats of smoothrite.

Supplied extra hangers to go on back of mufflers were in fresh air, 6" from the where they were supposed to bolt.

My afterburner headers set about 2" further apart than the x pipe would've liked.

Anyway guys at North American persevered and even although it was a lot "just" to fit an exhaust, if you consider it a bespoke stainless system, was a bargain.

So, big thumbs up for guys and the noise is great - much lower rumble (set my neighbours car alarm off [:)]) but you may be better off with a Flowmaster. And they're cheaper [:@]

*can say race as bought it (and the front one with sexy adjustable rosejoints) from a bloke who used them on his race T/A. He'd already sold his 6 pot callipers that would fit 15" wheels before I met him[:'(]

I know exactly how tight a dual original exit 2nd Gen system with X pipe is to custom build in Stainless [;)]

No supprise that an out of the box system will not work

Finlay i have had a few cars in lately with custom made stainless systems, there seems to be a new company that has started doing them, they are good at welding but the systems are c**p too smaller boxes and it seems they go for easy fit so it all hangs low.

I have seen plenty that go under the rear axle as well....lol (I never understood that)

A system on a 2nd gen takes 2 days to do correctly and as the system need mounting quite solid (low movement rubber mounts) building the system with two flexi's near the headers is a must IMO

Most of the custom stainless steel systems seem to be in 2 1/4 inch max as well.. We can do upto 3" (Well 4" for the big Oil burners)

I will be in touch soon mate when i start the TA project as i havnt found anything good enough for it yet in the States, The exhaust has to be spot on with this one. Also may be getting a 68 Firebird so will need some bits for that too. [;)] Too many projects so little time.[:(]
