Just watched wheeler dealers on discovery real time.

They did an 84 vette - same as mine more or less  - thing is they also showed what appered to be an 86 vette ie C reg.

The owner stated that he had had the car 8 years and that it was all original - however it had a crossfire motor along with correct crossfire side mouldings on the wings. So this was an 84 car of that I have no doubt yet it was registered as an 86!!

Any ideas how or why?

Phil all depends what ID number he gave the DVLA ..and what was on the paperwork.that came with the car ....it might also be that it had never been registered before 86..
if he used the later engine number then that could be the reason either that or he has been sold a dodgy motor

Could understand it on the use thing chris - ie if it came into country new as a demonstrator etc andw as never registered for road use till 1986.

But the engine number would only match an 84. Looks like they shoulda done their homework before showing what maybe a very dodgey motor on tv

maybe it had been hungaround in a showroom waitin to be sold an registerd,if it wer one a last crossfire just before the new tpi was about to be released, yed wait fer new faster vette or wait till the crossfire was knocked down in price an so cheap ye couldnt afford not to buy it

years ago mi dad was a motorcycle dealer,an thed be odd new bikes that just wouldnt sell ,eventually yed get one maybe 5 years outa date but still sold with the new registration ,

Yeah totaly know what you mean dave.

Think that'd make it quite a rare car then too.  As if it where ever registered in states then it would count as a 2nd hand car and therefore be registered  on an A. So it either spent 2 years waitin to be sold in the states. Or it has been a show car like the vette chassis in millets show room and spent 2 years without registration :)

Theres a thought - with the chassis from millets and a pretty comprehensive catalogue you could theoretically build an 07 C4 with a Crossfire engine. Brand New unregistered

the other thing to consider, if it came into US base over here. If it didn't leave the base it would not need to be UK registered.

THo it would of had to come in as  a new vehicle then again wouldn't it -  never previously registered in the states?

I have copies of the import docs for mine and it came over in 89 and spent a year unregistered as it was a US service guy Called Croft who brought it in. Then registered it as he left but as it had been used in the states got an age related plate - ie an A

a mate of mine has a 1966 chevy chevele but it is on a 1979 T reg plate. it has free road tax ie pre 1973. the car came over here from the usa in 1979.

I have seen other cars with alot newer reg plates at shows & meets. like sy who comes to the cambridge meet in his mustang. his car is older than the reg plate. also my old 1976 camaro was on a 1979/80 V reg

so have a look next time you are at a big show. I bet you see 1 or 2 cars with newer reg plates on.

Kool - cheers for that Oz - never noticed em before - suppose a lot of it is due to my lack of experience with other marques than vettes - and all told I only knew this un was an 84 due to the engine
