Hi guys, I have a 2nd gen T/A. 1974. Apparently theres some new directive that states the car now has t oshow orange indicators (currently its white at the front, red at the rear). Bollox.

Anyone know of a way around this? Even if its a gubby job that I can just have on for the MOT?

cheers
Mark

A lot of us have the reversing lights as rear indicators, and yellow
front markers, with a dual filament bulb, but the best thing to do is
find a yank friendly MOT tester.

Thanks mate, I`ve managed to find 2 new headlight units that combine mainbeam and orange indicators from Cas-Am. For the rear, the "reversing lights mod" seems the best way to go like you say. Thanks for your assist. (NO yank friendly MOT testers up here bah!)

when you find a good m o t er ( one that will pass red light ) go to them even if you have to drive a long way.

in the long run they will let all sorts pass if they like yank cars. ie running on headers only, red back lights , no seat belts. that sort of thing.

there are lots of mot places that dont like yanks so will do there best to get rid of you.

also if you get some green light paint ( the sort that chavs get ) you can paint you bulbs. green lights with red lens makes orange indicators. I have done this in the past.

reckon its not a case of dont like yanks ,its traffic an mot regulations, if a mot tester lets a dodgy car thru an mot ,an that car is involved in a mishap an police are involved ,the mot garage can lose its mot testing licence after spendin thousands upon thousands of pounds on mot test equipment,
personally i dont have a problem with flasher lights bein white orange or red ,but thes thousands of car drivers dont expect them ,they think yer got a problem with yer wiring
so whos gonna be held responsable fer a mishap thru wrong colored flashers, the guys gonna say yer dint signal yer dint have flashers blah blah blah
the orange flashers are fer other road users benefit ,not that you think they look better red or white

Got to agree with Dave on this one, when I imported my truck the brake lights served standard double-duty as indicators as well. I would have *loved* to have kept it that way, as I thought it looked super-cool, but I converted them anyway, turning the reverse lights into indicators with yello bulbs behind the white lenses.

The reason I converted was exactly as Dave said "Insurance & Accidents". I probably could have got it thru an MOT with red indicators, but it just isn't worth giving someone else the ammunition of "you didn't indicate / your indicators don't work properly" in a smash.

The law is the law ..and unless you want to void your insurance plus all the other associated aggro then there is only one solution change your lights to comply with the law.
If you change your lights back after passing the MOT you are committing an offence and again there are consequences should anything happen..is it worth it in the long run...

Its all well and good finding "A yank freindly MOT man" but if he lets some of the things OZ said through is he worth going to.  I wouldn't go to him.
My MOT man  is very keen but also very fair and that is why I have been going to him for nearly 10 years (I take both my daily drivers there as well) some minor fault ie: a bulb failure or such and he will pass it because he knows it will be fixed straight away ...but anything else and it's a fail

UPDATE: I now have orange indicators all round, and a new 12 months MOT certificate. As for changing them back you all make a good point regards insurance claims if I get rear-ended, its the only thing preventing me from going back to how they should be. I guess its just annoying me that the car has been in UK for 20 years and i`m the mug who gets the hassle (and associated bill) from the MAN.

Blue bulbs through a red lens give an orange light (never tried green). here's how to do it. cut a potato in half, stick the bulb into the spud to just below the glass level heat to 200C/gas mark 5 for 20 minutes, take the spud out & paint the bulb, put it back in the oven til the spud is cooked, eat it while the bulbs cool down, fit on to your car & go for a cruise feeling smug!. Dont forget an MOT test is a safety check,& not a severe one at that. Present clean well maintained cars to your MOT station & you wont have a problem. I was an MOT tester for years & was horrified at some of the death traps that turned up.Of course when I failed them it was all my fault that they couldn't take their loved ones out in cars with dodgy brakes/steering/tyres etc, sadly some american car owners expected me to wave them through.Keep the car up to scratch, drive safe & sober & have fun!P.S. try your local boy racer supplier for the paint.
