Ive developed a bit of a weird problem on my car over the past couple of months. Every now and then i will go to start it up, i turn the key, the lights come on on the dash and the fuel pump engergises, then usually i turn the key again to fire it up but sometime all that happens is a click and nothing, try starting it again and nothing comes on the dash either, everything is dead. If my door is open the bong bong noise goes quieter and funny too, as if its batteries were running out if you know what i mean. Ive found all i have to do is disconnect the battery for literally 5 seconds and it fires right up. The battery itself is fine, that was the first thing i checked, its charged at 12v when the car is off. It happened outside work the other day, so i had to pry the battery cable off coz i didnt have any tools with me, left it off for a few seconds, wedged it back on and it fired straight up, any ideas ?

It could be a bad cell in the battery. Sometimes it could appear to be fine and have a decent voltage but still not do anything. Mine used to do that, it would just seem to be completely dead everynow and then, but with started immediately with a jump start, or sometimes if I just left it for a while. How old is the battery? If its over 2 years, its probably worth changing anyway - especially if you don't use it over the winter. They're much happier being in constant use all year round. Also clean the connections on the battery, or change the connectors on the main wires. And a bad earth is also a good call. I wouldn't have thought it would be a starter issue if all the lights go out before you tried to start it.

Cheers lads, Just got back from a weekend away, like i said i stuck the voltmeter on it with the car off and it was charging at just over 12v, when i switch the ignition on it charges at around 9v according to the meter on the dash, then its just over 12v when the car is running, i get 14.something on the voltmeter when its running which is all fine. It nearly crapped out over winter with it standing so long, my fault really for letting it stand without disconnecting it, it just turned over thankfully coz i didnt wanna jump start it. Ive got a fresh battery if it turns out to be that so thats no problem, this battery has lasted very well, its been on the car since october 2004, especially as i got it for free. My dad works in a bodyshop so he just takes batteries off new cars that have been smashed in, not sure what my new one come off but its the same size as my current one. But i'll check all the connections first then i might stick the new battery in for piece of mind.

Is the rating the same on it? Just becasue it's the same physical size doesn't mean its got the same power. A V8 needs a fairly juicy battery to get it started. Something like the equivolent of a Land Rover battery should be fine. You can get them from Halfrauds if you need to. Or, of course, you could just get them for free... 3 years is a fairly decent life for a battery tho.

Gonna try and get my new battery on tomorrow if its the same rating, was at a meet tonight, started pouring with rain so everyone started heading off and guess what happens....CLICK, had to open the bonnet in the pissing rain and disconnect the battery, and reconnect it to get it going which was fun. And too top the night off, coming out of the carpark one of my bowling ball caps came off, first time thats ever happened ! it was a good job my mate in another KITT replica was behind me, he pulled over and picked it up for me coz i had no idea it had flew off
