I wonder if someone maybe able to point me in the right direction with a problem I have. A couple of weeks ago, I had a service, and got my front brake pads (Dodge OEM) replaced, a couple of days later (Sunday AACI Aut Nats) I'd popped out for 10mins just before heading off to billing. Got back home and I could smell something burning, then I noticed my brake pads (both) were smoking a lot for about 5-10 minutes. Wen't to the show anyway and been driving regular every day since with no problem. Popped over to post office depot and when i got back home this evening, my brake pads are smoking like a barbecue again? Anyone know what might be wrong?

Sounds like your calipers are sticking.

Sounds very much like a siezed Caliper to me Dan, had the same problem myself on a Caddy & it was the locked Caliper.

also been to the garage this morning, they couldn't find anything wrong and just removed and put pads back on, they did say that the calipers were fully depressed, and the pads nearly fell out on 1 side? they just lubricated the brake clips etc. I'm not exactly brilliant on cars, done a few basic bits. But it sort of sounds like possibly air has got into the break fluid causing the calipers to stay open or locked closed sometimes? I suggested this, but they couldn't find anything wrong. Just hope all is ok, or on my way to belgium next week hopefully they don't fail, and I end up driving straight into the english channel at the end of the day it's happening to both, so like you say dodgy pads, or break fluid, nothing to do with clips, lubrication or whatever. sorry forgot to say, in between the smoking incidents, i've driven to Cambridge, Luton and Bristol with no problems. yesterday, was a 10 minute drive of about a 5 mile round trip. to me (what do i know though) this means an intermittant fault and not the pads, or there would be nothing left by now??? if you guys got any other ideas, I would be really happy

Calipers can stick intermittently Dan. The dealership may not spot it as they will probably put as spreader in there to push the pistons back. I would be looking at the side that they described as 'pads nearly fell out'? If they are that loose then maybe the caliper is sticking in as well as out. Just depends on when you look at it and under what circs its sticking. Be careful, cos if the caliper gets hot enough it will screw the seals in the pistons and you will lose fluid. If you can run to it, have them (or someone you know that knows where they're at) strip t ecalipers out and check them. If the pistons are sticking there will be a mark on them running around their circumference or at least part of it. The mark appears usually where they are sticking. Heat is the enemy of brakes mate, be careful. The dealership will probably have bled your brakes with a vacuum unit so the chances of air being in there are slim I would think. I would look again at the calipers.

sticking calipers would be my bet....also check that the calipers are centering....I had that on me dak and I had to take the calipers off and clean up all the mounts so they could slide.
