My 71 still has the old 1 candle power sealed units - going to convert to halogens, question is, can I just fit RHD ones or are the adjusters on the mountings specific to LHD?

You should be able to just fit them.

On my 79, the light unit is not directly bolted in, but held into the bucket(which has the adjusters on) by a trim ring.

sometimes, there not wired up same as american,so if the halogens are dim when fitted thats why ,think the earth may be diffrent, only got 3 wires to mess around wi,so not too complicated,
i had a problem many years ago, when altering some square transam light units, for halogen euro type lamps ,unless it wer mi transam that had been wired up wrong by some one before i got it

Your best option is to upgrade the wiring and install some relays.  The old 70's wiring wasn't designed to cope with modern halogen power, and as Dave says, they may be dim.  Worse still, you could end up burning out the wiring or switch.

Relays will give you max power to the lights (= bright lights!) and protect your old wiring.
