Hi All!
I'm new here... Just registered last month...
I got a nice Oldsmobile and i am looking for a carburetor for it.
it's a 4 barrel carb, make is ROCHESTER.
I can't see the part number on it, must be on the bottom and i don't want to remove it as I don't know how.
The car details:
Make: Oldsmobile
Year: 1978
Model: 98 Regency Coupe
Engine: V8 350 (5.7) Petrol
My mechanic says I shouldn't get a universal one as it will require additional modifications to apply it. and i guess there are no new ones so i need a refurbished one.
Anyone got a clue ?

I have searched and there are a lot of refurbished ones on ebay, the problem i have is choosing the right one. My mechanic knowledge is crap and i know that looks can be decieving.
I tried to find somewhere on the internet to tell me the specs and even got the original auto repair manual, but it has 6 different ones in it and they look similar.

 G'day mate and welcome from all down here...enjoy the site.
How do you know you need a new carb.? is it your mechanic..it may just need a rebuild kit and they are easy to locate via American Auto Spares and other suppliers in the UK.
Others out there in your area will be able to help give 'em a chance!

by the way welcome to the forum, now this maybe a longshot but try contact a main dealer in the states and see if they gan give you a carb match from your vin number,,,,,, told you it was a long shot!!!!!

Ok, cool!!! thanks for your replies!
i'll try all of the above..
basically the problem is that the carb is flooding fuel... i got a fuel leak . it's dangerous!
the problem is the float and my guy says it can't be fixed its a wear out...
not sure. i mean the dude is a star, he really knows about cars. plus he's private, its not like he WANTS me to buy a carb from him. he told me its not safe.

Hii, welcome.
A float is like any other part other than the casting of the carb - replaceable. The only technically difficult part would be to set the correct level for it once it's in the bowl, your mechanic should be able to do that. Try US Automotive, one of our sponsors, and don't forget that to take the top off a 4bbl you will also need a geasket set for the carb itself. If you take your time and don't force anything there's not much to changing a float.

I have a old carb here I think it is a rochester. can you take a pic of yours and put it on here. if it is the same you can have it ( it dont look good but it works ) and it may get you back on the road.

well come to the forum
if its the oldsmobile 350 engine thats fitted to your car,
it could well be the same carb as fitted to the pontiac transam thats fitted with the oldsmobile 403 engine (lots of them about ,ive had 4 in past years)
recon the could be a few a them around as loads of owners replaced perfectly good carbs fer performance carbs ,hollys or edelbroks
