Ok, so I've got this 53 Chevy with the 350 smallblock motor,   It starts up pretty well most days and when you drive off everything is fine, you can open it up and it gets a real move on,no problems,  once its warm, it starts to pink under load, I know its probably a timing problem and I've had it set to the right degree's but it still pinks, moving the dizzy this way and that improves things but not right yet, how do you get the motor running perfect? is it maybe a jetting problem?  fuel not high enough octane?   Like I say, great at first but goes pinking when warmed up!! not enough fuel getting to the carb when hot?   Mo

Hi Mo--Assuming you are using the correct grade of fuel, the long-term solution is to retard the ignition timing slightly so that the spark occurs further around the cycle and the explosion occurs after the piston has passed top dead center. Retarding the timing too far will not cause problems up to a point, but power and efficiency will be lost to some degree...[;)]

have you tried usin diffrent petrols or higher octane rateing,
in past ive had cars which would pink with cheap supermarket petrol but not with proper petrol station petrol[&:]
think supermarket petrol stations dont get the same anti knock additives as say a Shell station,or so a tanker driver once told me[:)]
or yer  could fit a more modern engine with a anti knock sensor[:D]

I agree Dave ....[;)]

Could be a number of things: How long has the carb sat on the engine? There may be a small air leak, especially when warm. How old is the engine? Is it set up for unleaded, are you using an additive? Don't forget octane levels in America were very low for a long time, a high octance fuel may well be putting things out of balance. How are the fuel lines running to the carb (Possible vapourisation) if all these things are ok then the timing could well be the issue. Retard it as far back as you can then set the carb to rich. if this cures it, then it could well be a case of finding a happy balance. Not much help I know but there are a lot of possibilities

you need to make sure the bob weights arnt weak or infact broke or stuck up with crap in bottom a dizzy so try some wd40 and work the rotar ark a little, this would make yer dizzy not advance up when revs are picked up if there tight, stick a decent timing light gun on it mo, see what its set at on tickover and it should be about 6deg, then pick up revs to 2.000 and it should pick up to about 22 deg, if its not moving the springs are naff/weak or broke, if it picks up too much fit stronger springs and yer sorted.

[sm=confused06.gif]Mo,s trucks got fitted with a brand new dizzy when he had to replace the head gaskets in the spring 07 and has been running it as his daily driver ever since. So if he hasn't tried to adjust the settings, has possibly picked up rubbish fuel or has been giving it a bit more stick than usual !!?? [;)]

[;)][:D] then in that case maybe while hes at bling he could let them lucas drag guys stick a timing gun on and see what its at static and just how far its advancing chris, would be good to know as some dizzys differ to others and will be good reference for others too.
other than that keep giving it plenty[:)][:)][:)]

I see how bad the air fillter was when mo took it out at billing to put a new one in ( it was had it buy the looks of it). so is it running any better now ?
