The transmission (auto) on my Dodge B250 van seems to be continually low on fluid. The van was stood for the best part of four years before I put it back on the road with a new engine. I dropped the transmission pan and changed the fluid and filter before starting it the first time last year and I've been fiddling about with the van ever since then sorting out little problems. I've probably driven about 60 miles in total since getting the thing running again.

I've checked the ATF level several times (hot, idling in neutral) and topped it up pretty much every time. It's now taken 5 quarts of ATF since I drained it and it was driving fine a couple of weeks ago. Haven't used it since but just started it today from cold and it's reluctant to engage drive or reverse again (I didn't have time to warm it up fully to check the level).

Anyway, my question is does anyone know how much fluid should go in my transmission (1990 if that helps)? The Haynes manual says 4 quarts, Chiltens doesn't specify but I've been searching around the internet and I've come up with all kinds of figures from 3 quarts to 11 quarts! Do I just have the wrong amount of fluid in or do I need to go looking for a problem?

Mik

Only place it could really be going Mik is on the ground under your Dodge.
Any obvious leaks at all? You do have to fill up the converter as well as th ebox itself, but if you didn't drop the box I guess the converter would still retain some.
I wouldn't pretend to be an expert mate, but I know of a man who is.

I will PM his number to you.

You havent got enough oil in it !!
  For example 727 auto + torque converter takes ;
U S 19 PINTS
UK   16 PINTS

That would be 9.5 US quarts then. Another different figure Assuming it drained down fully into the pan whilst it was stood it makes sense that there's not enough fluid in since I've put 5 quarts in so far. Which is kind of what I was thinking.

Having said that I had a good look around underneath and I think there is a slight leak from the rear seal as well. I'm not sure it's very serious though as the propshaft hasn't sprayed it all over the underside of the van.

I've got another 3 quarts on order at the moment so I'll wait for that to arrive, try topping it up again and see what happens before worrying too much.

Thanks for the help. My transmission is the 3-speed + overdrive version (A500 if I remember it right). Does having the overdrive mean that I'll need even more fluid than a box without it?

Hi Mate, I'm no expert, but I once blew a transmission hose at a show and lost a lot of fluid, I repaired the hose at the roadside and I had some fluid to top it back up, but not quite enough, I was in the middle of nowhere so I had a drive to a gas station to get somemore, during the drive, one minute I had gears and then the next I lost the gears, but I managed to get to a gas station, top it up and it was as good as ever, so low fluid I know, will make it miss gears,  Mo.

yeah, that makes sense since the box relies on fluid pressure to hold the gear selection. Less fluid means you get air in the system and lose pressure.

See, I almost sound like I know what I'm talking about now Mine seems to drive OK but if you shift from drive to reverse a few times it stops working. Leaving it in park for a few seconds allows some fluid to get back to the sump and things start working again. The level is definitely low, I just need to figure out whether this is because I didn't put enough fluid in in the first place or whether it's escaping out the other end. I'm currently thinking it might be a bit of both.

Its pretty messy stuff, I know this from when I dropped the truck off jacks, but didn't take away the half full bottle of fluid under the truck, yep! it spreads out accross the floor very nicely    and it sort of sticks your hair together when you don't notice the fluids got on your hat and you put in back on your head!! yep! There should be some sign of leaking surely? when your parked up? while running it would show up splattered underneath you would think.  Mo.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking but the underside of the van is cleaner than the inside. There was a small fresh stain on the tarmac the other day after I'd been running it without going anywhere but I'm not sure it's losing enough to cause a big problem.

Still waiting for some more fluid to arrive to top it up and test it some more.

the small leak is probably just a seal that has hardened with the van being stood for a while. it will soon soften and should be Ok after a few miles. i have just had my box rebuilt with all new seals fitted and there is a slight leak from the front seal ..but it's not a problem..check all you levels after the engine is warm and you have manually gone through all the gears with the engine running .You will probably find that lack of fluid is your problem as four quarts will be with the torque convertor being full. My C6 took 12 pints to fill from empty

No, ATF still not turned up and I've been too busy with other things to worry about it for the last week or two. Too many projects, too little time. Things are calming down a bit now so I'll get back to looking at this soon.
