Baz_d69 -> Dodge 92' Ram Van atf? (Apr. 19 2008 14:12:47)

Hi all,

I found this site through scrawling on google looking for anywhere that can tell me which atf fluid to use in my 92' Dodge ram van, it's a 3.9 on an auto tranny. I know it's supposed to be Mopar 7176 ATF +3 (or preferably +4), but I don't know where I can get that, or the suitable equivalent of it in the UK. Any help is appreciated!
Also have a 80's Caddy Brougham Fleetwood for a few years, though I still need to get round to importing it over here, so expect some questions on that soon! [:D]
Thanks in advance!

US Automotive in Bedford stock the ATF +3 (and presumably +4 too). I've bought it from there for my van. http://www.usautomotive.co.uk/

Thanks for the reply Mik. I checked the dipstick, and apparently dexron II should be fine too, so I'll give that a shot first, as most places stock it.
Did try the site though, couldn't find any oils, I presume you have to ring them up.
Cheers

wouldnt have thought yed have much problem gettin  atf +3 or 4 nowadays from any local carparts stockists,
some older type oils can froth up inside yer box so yer get loads a little airbubbles where ther should be oil [&:]
result could be huge  gear box rebuild ,just fer sake of gettin the better quality newer type oil

found this infomation
Definition: A special kind of oil for use in automatic transmissions. There are several types: Dexron II, Dexron III, Type F, Mercon, Mercon V, Chrysler 7176 and several varieties of Chrysler ATF-Plus. All are "friction-modified" lubricants except Type F. Dexron II and Mercon have similar additive packages as do Dexron III and Mercon V. Even so, use only the type of ATF specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Using the wrong type of ATF can cause transmission problems. If you do not know what type of fluid the transmission takes, READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL! Some dipsticks are also marked as to the type of ATF required. "Universal" ATF fluids are available that supposedly meet the OEM requirements for many friction-modified applications, but make sure the label says it meets the specific vehicle requirements before using. The newer ATFs such as Dexron III and Mercon V are longer lived than earlier ATFs, but can still oxidize if the transmission runs too hot. Trailer towing is especially hard on ATF unless the transmission is equipped with an auxiliary oil cooler. Recommended change interval for older vehicles is every 24,000 to 30,000 miles. For newer vehicles, see the owners manual.

Dexron II is printed on th dipstick, though some sites have warned against it regardless of what the dipstick or manual say. I've searched quite a bit for ATF +3 in the local shops, nothing has come up. I've put Dexron II in, it's shifting fine, so fingers crossed all is well.

Dexron II is listed in my manual too but when I looked in the local parts shops, I found several versions of Dexron II (not to mention several other Dexron variations) and was a bit confused. Since having the wrong fluid is generally a bad thing, I rang US Automotive and bought the recommended stuff.

I've never seen ATF +3 or +4 in any parts place here. I think it's only used by US vehicles. There is however some "ATF 3" (no plus) which is different again as far as I can tell.

US Automotive don't list many products on their web site but they're a friendly bunch if you ring them up (or call in person if you happen to be local). They seem to be able to supply most things I've needed although sometimes there's a bit of a lead time if they have to ship from the USA.

Thanks again guys, all seems well with the dexron II stuff right now. It's actually a universal atf which meets those different Dexron II specs as well as others [sm=bomb.gif]

Only problem now is, the atf is leaking [:(]

Glad it's not just me then *sigh*

Dave: glad you mentioned cas-am, I often forget we have local suppliers of specialist stuff as well as the long-distance mail-order ones. I might look them up some time.
