Hi,

My fuel pump has gone and I need to find a new one.  I've got a 57 Chevy with the 283 engine but the previous owner replaced the mechanical one with an aftermarket universal fuel pump and I'm a bit stumped as to what I should be looking for.

I've been told about a Carter pump and that I need one for about 4psi but spoke to someone else and they didn't really know what psi I need!

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what I should go for and weather I can actually get one over here at all?

I made the mistake of fitting a Holley electric fuel pump on the chevy truck, I couldn't get it to quieten down, ran constant, very noisey, tried rubber mounts but made little odds, took it off after a few days and got a far simpler one that just ticks as its using fuel up, the Holley sounded like it was connected to a fire hose !![&o] Mo.

i think with the holly ones you have to fit inline pressure switch as there high flow and that gets it down to a tick mo. also have found they work better mounted flat rather than on bulkhead on there end too for some reason,dj.

The Holley that was originally on Angies Dart was a noisy sucker too! We (I [&:]) fitted a Facet like dj has recommended from the Tweeks and its fine.

Also check whether the pump you buy is a pusher or puller as this determines where you mount it ...A pusher mounts near the tank and a puller mounts near the carb.
Most new pumps are now solid state transisterised so they run quieter ..but if they are noisy then fit an adjustable pressure valve and you can raise or lower the pressure. This can help in power gains and also quieten down the pump. most carbs need approx 7lbs pressure for everyday running but it can be as low as 4.5 lbs or as high as 9lbs ...
As Bren said Holleys are noisey but great for racing ..whilst the Facet is more for everyday use.

'ts good advice. Get an FPR with a guage attatched and you'll know exactly what its running at. That's what the rodders and dragster boys do.
