Mst007 -> Urgent advice anyone, wheels (May 4 2008 13:53:55)

    Hi all, I have a 95 GMC Safari. 2 days ago started hearing a metallic noise coming from nearside front wheel, sounded exactly like I had run over a nail, as the noise increases in frequency when going faster and slows down enormously when the wheel is barely rotating. Thought oh bugger, gotta nail in the tyre. So, off I go to the local kwikfit to see if they`ll have a look.

Got the van on the ramp, its not a nail in the tyre. Theres some SERIOUS movement on the wheel, not only can it be moved laterally (side to side) when given a good shake, but can also move in diagonals as well. Bollox, thinks I. This is more serious than I thought, and I`m very happy I got it checked out rather than have the wheel come off at speed, with my family in the back.

My problem now is that I need to understand what part is failing in order to get a replacement. The Kwikfit feller didnt have a clue, said there seemed to be lots of potential arms and joints that it could be and he recommended a specialist.

Anyone any ideas please? cant drive until i get it sorted..gulp

Mark

 were are you at in country fella as theres some top american repair shops all over the country, sounds like some play in balljoints maybe and track rod or drag link but you would only get a clunk or rattle, if its a noise that gets worse on speed it a wheel bearing thats naff/dry or worn hence play in it too, nothing major or too costly but if you could see play while it were on ramps at kwik fit they should have been able to point out the parts req and order and sort it for yers in no time,

Sounds like a wheel bearing.
If there is a cap with a small hole in the middle get a screwdriver and lever it off.
It should be full of grease.
A big nut in the middle with possibley a split pin through it, and maybe a cap shaped washer, pull out the pin and tighten the nut as tight as you can and see if you still got play. with the wheel off the ground.
If it cures it, get a new set off wheel bearings.

If its not you need to see a machanic it could be bottom or top ball joints which need a long lever to pull and push to see if you got play.
Steering track rod ends will give play 9 to 3 O'clock direction

Seeing as you say it moves in all directions I'd guess at wheel bearings, usually tapered ball races, sometimes there a sod to get off the axle and the roter.
A competent D.I.Yer. or mechanic should do it in a couple of hours.

Hope this helps mate
