First of all, apologies for not posting - I know, set up a new account, forget all about it, then come back when I get a problem...  but anyway, here goes...

Had real problems starting my Chevelle (dets in the sig) up this morning. It started after the usual amount of cranking, but straight away it was obvious that several cylinders weren't firing, and engine had to be held at about 1500 rpm just to stop it stalling straight away. Some clanking and banging also heard - sounded like it was deep down inside the engine bay. Lots of smoke from the exhaust.

Took about 10 minutes or so of this (nice for the neighbours on a Sunday morning) until I was able to limp away. Initial running, the clanking was more obvious and noticeably slowing the engine after a big clank, but after about 10 minutes when the engine was warm, all symptoms went away and it ran totally normally.

Clanking and banging heard both when trans in neutral or in gear. No backfiring. Dials reading normal, tranny fluid and engine fluid at correct levels (tranny fluid and filter freshly changed). Last time I took it out, not very long ago, was running fine. Choke not stuck.

Any idea what's going on ? Is the clanking just a misfire at the wrong stage of a piston stroke, fluid in the cylinder, or something else ? What could have changed since the last run to cause all the missing cylinders ?

Appreciate your ideas,

Stu

How long since you last ran it ...possibly a sticking hydraulic lifter or fouled plug causing it to misfire.......Try it again and if it has the same symptons then I would get it looked at by a decent garage that knows Yank engines ...

was only a couple of weeks ago, and as I said, no problems then.  Will have a look at the lifters and plugs this weekend, and let you know, cheers

Don't know about big blocks but small blocks are notorious for stem seals failing. I have a similar problem on start up sometimes though not as severe. Checking the plugs is a good call. Stem seal failure is not a big deal but it is time consuming to do. Essentially, they are allowing oil into the cylinders and this is the blue smoke you might have seen.

will have a look at the plugs and at the valve clearances - think it's a solid lifter instead of hydraulic - what would I be looking for for a failed stem seal ?

will also check the ignition - being suggested it might be something as simple as a faulty ground on the MDS.

Do a belt and braces job and check your compression on each pot. Time consuming but at least you'll know if they're all about the same. Sounds odd to me. But cars don't ususally develop major problems for not being run. Check for a good strong spark at each plug - and with an MSD ignition be careful, use an inline  plug tester if you can, a jolt off that ignition could hurt you badly. Like Chris said, check the plugs for fouling after its run for a minute or three. Smell them for petrol or oil. Petrol is like it aint firing, oil is that its being contaminated. Give them a gentle brushing and clean them up if they're dirty and try it again.

What ignition system are you running on it..if you have an MSD unit I would recomend running you earth straight to the battery ..if that isn't possible make sure you earth it to the body and not the engine ....also check your engine earth if that's a bit dodgy that can cause problems ..
Worn valve stem guides  can normally cause blue smoke until warm- up has been acheived ..Do a compression check and if the seals are faulty you will here the air escaping via the Valve stems...( remove the rocker covers first to allow you to hear it)
Chevies are notorious for wearing the valve guides out ..and will require the heads to be removed and new phopher bronze guides fitted a local engineers did my heads for me and charged me £150.00 to fit new guides and skim the heads. Al;though that was about 6 years ago ..

predictably, when I tried this weekend, the car started fine and was running totally normally

am just wondering now - the time before when I took it out (before the time I had problems starting) it was raining - I don't normally take it out in the rain - since the ignition, ditributor etc are all close to the gutter at the top of the hood, I wonder if I'd just had some water ingress which has dried up...

couldn't find my compression tester, but did check the plugs (all ok), the wiring round the MSD (ok) and the distributor (ok)

think it was just water in the ignition after all - took it out yesterday afternoon after having overhauled the ignition and it was running literally better than ever.  No more lumpy idle, purring like a beast  :-)
