Andy Blick -> Cadillac Water pump (May 11 2008 23:15:19)

Hi guys,

My 89  Cadillac Coupe De Ville, 4.5 litre front wheel drive, leaks coolant from the bottom hose where it connects to the water pump inlet. I have replaced the hose but it still leaks as the metal pipe is pitted and corroded slightly ( a few pin holes in the pipe). There apprears to have been a bit of a bodge done about six years ago or more as I have owned the car that long with no problems so must have been done before then. The hose is new but there are a few pin holes in the metal and water leaks out. I would like to replace the inlet pipes/water pump as I believe in fixing the problem properly. However, the Haynes manual says the inlet is connected to the timing chain cover and that looks pretty darn inaccesible, never mind removing the thing.

Has anyone out there removed the timing chain cover/water pump, etc?

It looks extremely difficult as the transverse engine layout means the water pump, etc is against the right hand side wheel arch.

Help!!!

Andy

I had the same problem myself years ago Andy & it was such a *******d to sort although I used to carry out all my own maintenance I gave up on the Pump & put it into a Garage.

Doesn't solve your problem but in some cases it's the bettter course of action mate.

I think Harry is right there. You could try a bodge with some leakfix tape around the pipe but it won't hold indefinitely. Think you're going to have to bite the bullet on this one. Just be absolutely sure that's where the leak is coming from as water has a nasty habit of travelling from one place to another and dripping - giving the impression that the leak is in one place when its not.

Thanks guys,

No easy fix by the looks of things. I had thought of trying a garage as I think the job is too big for me, perhaps you have convinced me this is the best way to go.

As ever, I'm grateful for the advice.
