1979 Z28 Chevrolet Camaro

1979 Z28 Chevrolet Camaro Hi fellow AACI members.

I'm Tony The Don (AACI Discussion Forum Name, (FATboyFAT chose the name - reckons I look like something out of the Mafia!!) (Prez) Well! He does tend to move in strange circles

Anyway, I've been around, and involved with, American cars since the late sixties, but my 'baptism by fire' took place in 1971 when I bought my first yank a '58 Chevy Impala Convertible. Previously owned by the road manager of the Wild Angels rock group, she was shell pink with brown fur fabric upholstery!!

Despite being a heavy beast the 283ci V8/2spd Powerglide was enough to provide some serious motivation! To say I was noticed is an understatement! At that time I ran a chauffeur-hire business, and guess which of my fleet was the most sought after wedding vehicle!!

Since those heady days I have owned numerous American motors including a lightning quick '68 Olds 442 which I bought from Chris Hext (formerly of Speed & Spares, Epsom). During the seventies and early eighties I was very involved with American Autoparts here in Surrey, and thus I had access to a constant supply of fabulous American machinery.

In the 60's & 70's I was heavily into the drag racing scene, and when I wasn't selling stickers, patches, kits etc for Autoparts I was racing a '64 Chevelle Malibu and a '67 Camaro. On my first ever run I was convinced that I was flying, but was brought back to earth with a timing slip (which I still have) showing 17.54 @ 96mph!!

1979 Z28 Chevrolet CamaroFast forward to the present and I currently own a '71 Mach 1 (dead scruffy but loadsa fun), a '88 Iroc-Z which I bought, unseen, off eBay and drove 200+ miles to collect! Finally there's my '79 Z28 (pictured), which came to me following a trade with my son (Mr Z), for my '87 Iroc-Z.

My plans for the Z28 are to get back into drag racing, and hopefully enter the "Street Racing Series. This car has been raced in the past and has some serious goodies on board. To date I have been unable to find out exactly what these goodies are, and what sort of times were achieved. Any info about the cars past life will be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile there's a lot of work to be done to get the beast race ready, especially as I have the other two motors demanding my attention.

Business commitments restrict the amount of time I can spend on my hobby, but I still get as big a kick out of the whole Yank/Custom scene now, as I did when I first got involved.

Finally, I would like to thank you for taking time out to read this, and to thank Harry and all the gang for giving us a truly excellent club.

Cheers
Tony - Member # 424
