1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham

1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale BroughamHi people,my name is Rob or Robbie on the forum.

This is my first American Car. It had been a dream of mine to own an American car for ages. I saved up and looked around on the internet and I couldnt believe that I could get a nice big American car for less than I would have to pay for a used Ford Ka (not that I would want one).

I had made up my mind that I was going to get myself my dream car. I got an American car magazine and looked through it for the sort of car I wanted, I knew I wanted something big and very American looking. I had looked at a few Oldsmobiles before so I knew they were the sort of thing I was after.

I was looking for cars near the South West, as I had to talk my brother into going to look at them with me, but I saw an advert for a 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88. When I phoned the guy selling it he told me he was in Portsmouth, I knew I had alot of begging to do to my brother. I talked my brother into going to look at it with me, and we agreed to set off on the Saturday morning.

1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88I phoned a few insurance companies as the Oldsmobile was a 5 liter V8 and I am only 21 with 2 years driving experience. I was amazed that the Oldsmobile would be cheaper to insure than my 1.8 Ford Mondeo.

It was a big day for me, I was already nervous, but when I went to pick my brother up he was still a bit drunk from the night before. I found him walking up his road with a pasty in his hand at 8am. This was scary as if I bought the car, it would be him that would have to drive it home. Luckly he was ok way before we got to the guys house.

I knew as soon as I saw the car that I wanted it, my now sober brother checked it out and took it for a drive. He loved it. I didnt drive it as I had never driven an automatic before, let alone a left hand drive. I bought the car after quite a short time as it was obvious that the car was in superb condition, the 75 year old man I bought it from had never taken it out in the rain before he took it to the garage to get 12 months MOT on it the day before I bought it. He had shipped the car over from Florida 15 years ago and had not driven it much in recent years. It had 96000 miles on the clock.

1984 OldsmobileI filled the tank up with unleaded (£50) and we started home (about 140 miles away). I followed behind in my Ford Mondeo. I hoped this was enough fuel. The journey home went well and the Oldsmobile had used less fuel than the Mondeo. It still had over half a tank left.

The next day I learnt to drive it on a quite road, it was easier than I thought. I spent the bank holiday Monday driving around getting used to it and showing it off to friends. They think I look like a pimp.

My dad who had wanted me to buy a more "practical" Suzuki 1.4 diesel instead, loved it as soon as he saw it. I then had to go around showing all the relatives. They all loved it too.

It is now a week after I bought the car and I am delighted with it. It is such a pleasure to drive. And it does ok on the fuel too. The only problem I have is that I am having to find some money to help pay to have the driveway at home widened. We are digging up the front garden to make parking space. It reallt is a big car.

Well I think I have written too much already, I hope you like the car. I know the photos arent great, but you get the basic look of it. Let me know what you think of it. Be kind I was driving a 1 liter Nova a year ago, I think it is much nicer than the kitted up Nova's all the other 21 year olds are driving.
